About YIC
Yoga in Colour (YIC) is a new Edinburgh-based community yoga initiative, holding yoga classes for people of colour.
Starting yoga in a public setting is intimidating for many, but can be particularly alienating for people of colour due to the ethnic predominance of the modern yoga industry and many yoga studios, in terms of both the teachers and those being taught.
Though studies show many people of colour face higher levels of stress, which yoga has been proven effective at managing, the barriers to accessing yoga in an accommodating way can also be higher. As a teacher of colour, I myself didn't attend an in-person yoga class until eight years into my practice, due to fear that something sacred would become another space in which I felt othered. YIC was created to be an antidote to some of the apprehension faced in shared yoga spaces.
These 90-minute classes act as a supportive, unintimidating space for minority ethnic people of all colours, genders, sexualities, and sizes to build community, practise breathwork, and flow together. White-passing POC are valid and welcome. The class is accessible from beginners to experienced practitioners. The yoga style may vary with each class.
Classes will begin monthly from January 2026.
Bookable at Eventbrite.
